Fireplace Restoration Elements
There are quite a few issues that arise and can cause issues to your fireplace. Understanding the elements that make up the fireplace in your home can go a long way. But no matter the issue, our Long Island fireplace restoration experts are here to help!
Heavy masonry materials are used in the construction of most wood-burning fireplaces. All are built on solid foundations, to ensure optimal stability. One type of masonry that is used is called a “Rumford” fireplace, which revolutionized the process of removing smoke from the fireplace and heated the home better than the fireplaces that came before it. This design, though old, is still used today and even outperforms some of the newer designs.
In general, the firebox of the fireplace is built with special heat-resistant firebricks and heat-resistant square clay tubes, or “tiles,” line the interior of the chimney. This is to ensure the safety of the home for when the fire is burning, as well as maintaining the longevity of the bricks. The hearth and fireplace are made of non-combustible materials, like bricks, stones, or tiles.
Chimney caps top off the chimney. These caps are important, because they keep rain and snow out and are typically made of metal or stone. These caps are installed with screens, which prohibit birds and animals from entering the chimney and, consequently, your home. The screens also contain any embers that may rise up to the top, preventing the roof from possibly catching fire.
Then there is the damper, which is a small, cast-iron door that is installed over the fire and leads to the chimney. It is operated by an attached handle. When the fireplace is not in use, the damper should remain closed. But when a fire is lit, it needs to be open to control how much air flows through the firebox to feed the fire and regulate the flames. A screen or mesh guard is installed in front of the fireplace, which keeps the embers from falling into the room. Sometimes glass doors are installed as well. These need to be left open for when the fire is burning and can only be closed once the fire has died down to an appropriate level.
An ash dump is a popular feature for fireplaces. This dump allows for the cold ash to be swept into a chamber located beneath the firebox. This allows for a more simple method of cleaning the fireplace. A cleaner, quicker process of removing the ash, since it is in the chamber.

What Our Clients Are Saying!
You have very professional and polite service men! They gave me some helpful tips about how to use my fireplace and really educated me about the chimney cleaning process.
Thanks for completing the job. By the way, I've already been referring you to friends. Your service techs were the most professional vendors I've had at my house in so long. It was a pleasure doing business with you. The stainless steel liner you installed was so inexpensive compared to the other two estimates I had. Thank you for your honesty.
I would highly recommend Always Affordable Chimney. They were very honest and cooperative. I am going through a divorce and had to wait months for my ex’s contribution and Tommy was more than patient and understanding. The work was done efficiently, neatly and to the highest level of quality. I would recommend them to anyone without hesitation.
These guys are great. The owner knows what it takes to get a job done. I had numerous issues and he found solutions, stuck with them and made it happen all while checking in on any of my concerns. I rarely come across anyone I would recommend to friends – I would sing this company's praises. From Tom and his intelligent crew to his wonderful office coordinator Justine (very professional and friendly), they came prepared, were considerate of my property, and did a fantastic job. They seem to love their work, go figure. Top of the line!
Thank you Tom for your exceptional job & advice at my Bay Shore home. I would have wasted a lot of money, time, & material if I listened to previous chimney companies. You're an angel!
